Benefits of Serving

Serving in AmeriCorps comes with both tangible and intangible rewards. Not only will you make an impact on your community, you'll also gain job skills and key experience that we hope will advance you in your career.

AmeriCorps members in Project GEOS are eligible for the following benefits:

  • $1,210/month living stipend (this is taxable income)
  • Health insurance (complies with Affordable Care Act)
  • Some student loans can be put in forbearance
    • If a member completes the term of service, the National Service Trust will pay all interest that has accrued during the term of service
  • Child care subsidy (varies by personal situation; max is around $400)
  • Upon completing of term of service, members receive an education award of $5,730 that can be applied to future tuition costs and some student loans 
  • Job skills training, including workshops on resumes, cover letters, networking, and interviewing
  • Free enrollment in the NC Environmental Educator Certification Program and some flexibility to attend workshops and complete the program
  • Additional training in disaster preparedness and response, working with diverse groups, goal setting, and more!
To complete a term of service, members must serve 1700 hours over the course of 10 months. This works out to 40 to 42 hours per week. Although members are often allowed to have the same holidays as other staff at their host site, they do not continue to accrue hours on these days.
