Application Instructions

If you're interested in doing a term of service with Project GEOS, read on for instructions on how to apply.

First, please note that all of these positions are dependent on the continued receipt of federal funding. Although we firmly believe the funding will continue to be available, we want to make sure you are aware that these positions are funding-dependent.

Please read the position descriptions, which are available at americorps.hiringthing.com. If you're interested in applying, click on the link that says, "Apply for this position." You will need the following information to apply:
  • Resume
  • Cover letter (click here for some awesome cover letter advice) You must include a cover letter that explains why you want this position and why your background is a good fit for the role you're interested in. Applications without such cover letters will not be considered.
  • Transcripts (unofficial are fine)
  • Proof of status as a US citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien
    • Acceptable documentation can include a copy of your birth certificate or passport

  • You will need to answer two short essay questions. We suggest you work on your answers in a text editor so you can save your work and then copy your answers into the application when they are ready. Please answer the questions thoroughly and concisely (about 200 words or so). 
    • Here are the questions:
      • Why do you want to participate in Project GEOS? What motivates you to spend 10 months doing national service, and how do you see this position helping your long-term career?
      • Please describe your experience with volunteering and community service.
Host sites are current reviewing applications, so please apply as soon as possible. Applications will be accepted until February 17th.

The following are acceptable forms of certifying status as a U.S. citizen or national:

(1) A birth certificate showing that the individual was born in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or the Northern Mariana Islands;
(2) A United States passport;
(3) A report of birth abroad of a U.S. Citizen (FS–240) issued by the State Department;
(4) A certificate of birth-foreign service (FS 545) issued by the State Department;
(5) A certification of report of birth (DS–1350) issued by the State Department;
(6) A certificate of naturalization (Form N–550 or N–570) issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service; or
(7) A certificate of citizenship (Form N–560 or N–561) issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Primary documentation of status as a lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. The following are acceptable forms of certifying status as a lawful permanent resident alien of the United States:

(1) Permanent Resident Card, INS Form I–551;
(2) Alien Registration Receipt Card, INS Form I–551;
(3) A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence; or
(4) A Departure Record (INS Form I– 94) indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence.
